A scene from Qudraphenia - apart from the clothes!
The 1960s saw an influx of young people. Students came for new courses at the University of Sussex (opened in 1962), whilst Mods and Rockers, two rival youth cultures made the town its playground. They clashed several times, the most infamous occasion being the 'Battle of Brighton' during the Whitsun holiday, 17-18 May 1964. This was the inspiration of the 1979 film, Quadraphenia, in which a Bank Holiday weekend in 1965 provides the excuse for the rivalry to come to a head.
