To prevent erosion, a sea wall was built from Black Rock to Rottingdean and a rock garden was laid out in Preston Park but THE 'Brighton Rock' that is most often recalled is the 1938 novel by Grahame Greene. Later made into films in 1947 and 2011, the novel is a murder thriller featuring antihero, Pinkie Brown, a teenage sociopath and up-and-coming gangster. A slum, possibly frequented by Pinkie, was in Circus Street. This was demolished in 1937 to make way for a new market.
