"I've lived in Brighton since 1978, moving from the suburbs of Leicester to go to art school. I loved Brighton then, as I still do today. But - especially after looking through the website - how I regret that I failed to document the town as it was, as it looked, way back then.”

These photographs were all taken in North Road by local resident, David Sawyers over three decades. North Road was originally a very narrow road that was a medieval field boundary. It became the main shopping High Street when the North Laine was the industrial centre of Brighton. Trams ran up and down it until the 1930s. After the Second World War, the whole area went into decline as manufacturing moved out to the Brighton estates.
